A sprawling dining and drinking complex, this place feels like a cross between a country club and one of those chain buffet-type of restaurants. Basically, it's a no-frills atmosphere with 70s era decor. But no one seems to care: it's all about the food, anyway, or, more specifically-the steak. A no reservation policy results in long queues out the door, especially deep Thursday through Sunday. Located out in Gateway on a super wide one-way arterial that feeds into the I-205 and Southeast Portland, Sayler's has been a magnet for beefeaters from across the city since the mid-1940s. Some say it's the best cooked-to-order steak in town-for the money. Meals come with all the fixings including a relish tray; a choice of soup, salad or coleslaw; choice of baked potato, French fries or rice; and dessert. The table condiments include six different sauces. Steak isn't the only food here. There's a good selection of seafood entrees, including lobster, shrimp, scallops and fish, as well as chicken dishes. The wine list is forgettable but you can order nearly any classic cocktail you desire.

If you know nothing of fine dining and want a hearty meal of average quality go to Saylor's.
