Wine Down, one of several wine bars now in the Laurelhurst neighborhood, possesses a cozy ambience others on this stretch lack, but it doesn't quite radiate the same convivial buzz. Still, it's a good option for a quick lunch and glass of wine, or a place to huddle with a loved one, especially when you're on an evening budget. The small plates and wine are priced a bit lower here than at the others. The menu is primarily comprised of typical scaled-down Italian starters and entrees -- breads, bruschetta, salads and pasta dishes. While there's nothing to sing about, the food fulfills a purpose. After-dinner wine and dessert seekers will find a serviceable dessert menu, though it won't be easy matching wine to sweets (no stellar dessert wines or ports that typically help marry flavors). The wine list is limited, but does offer several surprisingly good options. If you'd rather taste than drink, try their three-pour special. -- Jo Ostgarden
