The owner of Gilberts Chowder House -- 2 blocks away from Breakaway -- opened this place as an upscale, quieter alternative to the often rowdy Old Port bars. It succeeds in drawing a slightly older crowd than your average bar; a crowd thats down with a more relaxed, loungelike atmosphere. No exposed brick here: the walls are painted and smooth, decorated with paintings and photos by local artists. Theres a cherry wood bar in the front lounge; the tables have cloths and candles; and the floor is carpeted. You can also take your drink and sit out on the patio. Theres live music on weekends -- mainly local groups that play blues and classic rock. But you dont have to just sit: theres a large dance floor, pool tables and darts. Special event nights include karaoke and Latin dancing. Evening food is pub-like, mainly wings and pizza- type things.
