At Portlands self-proclaimed get-down, funkiest bar, you actually have to climb up on the bar to dance. The bar itself is the dance floor, and stretches the length of this long and narrow space. Think Cancun, with a twist of Maine. The staff throws leis, sombreros and other funky straw hats out to the crowd to keep the festivities happy and hopping. Its a tropical atmosphere, with spackled ochre walls, ceramic tile floors and wood tables. A patio opens during the warmer months, with some couches, a beer bar and another dance area. The music all comes from a well-programmed jukebox, with everything from Blondie to James Brown to Barry White -- musical variety designed to get the girls up and dancing on the bar, explains one manager. As youd expect, there are lots of frozen and tropical drink specials, like the Bowl -- a strong and sweet secret recipe concoction that comes with four straws. The other trademark drink here is the Corona Bucket, a well- iced foursome, which saves you from trying to catch the bartenders eye. Located in the Old Port section of town, this lounge draws a packed young crowd on the weekends. Gawkers can watch the scene through the picture window out on the street. --Necee Regis
