Stop into the Underground on a Sunday night and youre likely to get transported into a theatrical scene where RuPaul lookalike drag queens and Freddie Mercury types in fetish leather grace both the stage and the dance floor. Come back on Monday and youll likely see some of the same Underground regulars in jeans and T- shirts, watching the football game or the slow- moving sea fish in the saltwater tank, and slugging back Budweiser drafts. The Underground is one of Portlands four gay venues, and some say its the best. The club scene is great here, attracting plenty of straights, too, who come here for the booty-shakin dance floor. The clubs seven-day string starts quietly, with happy-hour drink specials, free pool and jukebox music or TV during the first half of the week. High-energy DJs garner bigger crowds on Thursdays and Fridays; but Saturday nights are when the lines out the door grow longer, and the dance floor, game room and lounge crowds get bigger. Once or twice a month, Sundays are the highlight of the week. These are the Sundays when the usual karaoke night includes a drag cabaret, featuring both local and national lip-synching divas. --Kiersten Aschauer

Oh, the memories at the "UG"
By gr8danemaine on 10/12/2005
My best memories of the "UG" were dancing to DJ TIm Staney back in the 90's. He was able to pull a night together like no other DJ the UG has ever seen. I remember following Tim to a Chris Clark rave after-hours, or the times he would play after-hours at Zootz. Those were some of the best club nights I have ever enjoyed in my life - despite Portland's small-city scene. Where is Tim Staney now? I know he moved from Portland to a DJ career in PTown, but have lost track of him since. It wasn't until the UG went Lesbian slow-song that it failed to be my favorite place to party.

Same old tacky queens
By bucksco66 on 11/20/2004
It's still the same old crowd of tacky queens, drinking the same drinks, that haven't gotten a "life" yet. In regards to the atmosphere - there's still the same old sewer pipes painted black on the dance floor ceiling - only now, they've repainted over the cigarette smole soot. Is this really the best Portland has to offer?
