Portlands oldest neighborhood gay bar was born in the 80s, and its an institution with a loyal following. The whole place is just a cozy 1,000 square feet. Inside, theres a mirrored wall, rough-hewn timbers and a black-topped, oak- trimmed bar. Theyve even managed to squeeze in a pool table. This is definitely the kind of place where you get primed to go out. There are 11 bartenders on staff, who each control the music while theyre pouring drinks. The sound can range from country to club mix, disco to hard alternative. Its never so loud that you cant have a decent conversation, though the weekend draws a more party-minded crowd; especially on the first and third Saturdays of the month, when bound and gagged folks show up for Leather Fetish Night. Ages range from 21 to 80 -- mostly men -- and a smattering of local heteros who stop in after work. On Fridays, check out the complimentary 4 oclock buffet provided by Davids, a local restaurant. Its more than wings and wieners, boasts amiable owner Ralph. Previous free samplings have included lasagna, stuffed pork chops, crudit platters and salads. Blackstones has an active community presence, sponsoring events outside the bar, like fall and winter roller-skating nights. Its located in the mid-town area, at the beginning of the West End. --Necee Regis

If you have no other choice

The staff is extremely nice, but it's really a dive bar. It suffers from the clients understanding that you couldn't possibly want to go out and just have a relaxing drink with friends. You MUST be there to get laid. (but the same can be said for most small town bars) I've been probably a dozen times in the last few years, and each time, I end up leaving because of the extremely cruisy atmosphere. In a real bar in a larger city, you actually can go and have a drink and not be pawed at by letcherous old drunks who think you're mere presence means you want to have sex with them. Again, it's not the worse place in the world, but for a small town bar, I guess you have to take what you can get.

Beyond the call to Duty

What many people don't know about Blackstones is the time and effort both staff and owner put into lending a helping hand to local charitable causes. In Addition - They have been and continue to provide warm - down to Earth service - (free buffet nights) and treat everyone like they are welcome. - I wish the establishment were bigger - someday maybe?

Blackstones is the best neighborhood gay bar in the city of portland. all ages, types, sexes are welcomed, despite the sexual preferences, choices of attire, or their age. the owners are very involved in the GLBT community and support the GLBT community.
