The Great Lost Bear, off the beaten tourist trail, is a must-go destination for microbrew fans. With more than 50 beers on tap, this local institution has grown in the past two decades from a neighborhood bar into a famous beer- drinking spot. Located in an old brick movie theater in the Woodfords part of town, the Lost Bears atmosphere is definitely funky. Old maps of Maine, artifacts and memorabilia hang on the walls, along with a stuffed bear head. The large horseshoe-shaped bar is separated from the restaurant by an etched glass wall. The restaurant has an enormous menu, with everything from steak to seafood to nachos to vegetarian specials like spanikopita and veggie Reubens. But theyre best known here for their burgers, which go well with the beer. The dining room is quite big, seating 125; and its a comfortable place for families, tourists and locals. The bar also pulls in a crowd from the nearby University of Southern Maine. Theres an outdoor patio available in the summer months. --Necee Regis
