Local customers tell stories of their grandfathers, and even great-grandfathers, eating and drinking at Ruskis. Established in 1878, Ruskis is the oldest continuously running tavern in Portland. Its also one of the best known and loved neighborhood joints. Ruskis is a postage stamp-sized place that seats not even 20 at the tables and just a dozen at the bar. Its in an old brick building, with a very busy interior -- awards, plaques, beer mirrors and dart trophies are everywhere.Ruskis is just a mile from the Old Port section, so its jammed from breakfast until way past dinner. People come as much for the food as they do for the rustic charm of the place. The menu is extensive, and breakfast, lunch and dinner are served all day. You can get a steak in the morning or eggs at midnight. Rumor has it that they sell more eggs Benedict here than the nearby Marriott does. Not to be ignored is the beer selection, featuring Ruskis own line of beer, Hooker Ale, formulated by the owners and brewed by local brewery Gritty McDuffs. Youll find a cross section of the community here: commercial fishermen, bank presidents, the editorial staff of the local paper and, of course, tourists. --Necee Regis

Just like home...

Moving back from Tucson, AZ to Portland's Ruski's in mid-fall. Eating there is like eating at home w/friends. I love bacon & eggs at strange hrs. Pot roast is better than any I've had. Mini-art gallery inside. Old boxing, etc. photos on walls. Enjoy...Bob Dickerson
