John Bovi is the latest in his family to take over and run this East Providence institution, and, when asked exactly what it is he runs, he takes a minute before deciding that Bovi's is in fact a tavern. There's a lot that goes on and some stuff that doesn't - putting a label on the place is hard. It's a brick-and-mahogany kind of place. You won't be able to order a full meal, but you can certainly improvise by mixing and matching the finger food that's offered. Bovi's is somewhat of a chameleon in its entertainment offerings. Monday night jazz has been a mainstay for some 32 years, as has its biweekly big band, Duke Belaire's 16-piece Jazz Orchestra. Usually the ''tavern'' is a 21-and-over joint by night, but, in the family spirit, John allows high-schoolers and families in to see the big bands. Weekends, though, are for big people only. Bands play Friday and Saturday nights, and the type of music, surprisingly enough, depends on who's playing. While most places these days offer jazz, R&B or blues, classic rock-based bands or Top 40, Bovi's books them all, and an interesting byproduct of the nondiscriminatory practice is an ever-changing clientele. During the week if there's a big game on, you'll be able to take it in along with a pint from one of five taps or something a little stronger from one of considerably more bottles. If there's not, you can get your own started, either at the pool table or the dart board. John's children are already putting in their time behind the bar, and it's probably safe to say that one or more will eventually graduate to tavern keeper. Family-run usually implies interest and commitment. Bovi's is no exception.
