Soul food. Just the sound of the words is enough to bring to mind thoughts of family and friends gathered together, enjoying home-cooked foods and sharing stories. Miss Fannie's captures that essence in her small shop on Broad Street. Fannie King came to Providence in 1965. She operated a food stand, followed by a catering business, before opening Miss Fannie's Soul Food Kitchen. Miss Fannie brings the real flavor of the South to Providence with her slow-cooked, finger-licking food. Choose from favorites like macaroni and cheese, pulled pork sandwiches, fried catfish, and fried chicken. Add side dishes like black-eyed peas, potato salad, candied sweet potatoes, collard greens and corn on the cob. Don't forget chitlins (fried pig intestine), pigs' feet and banana cream pie (not necessarily all at once, though). The restaurant itself is simple, with counter service and a handful of tables. Prices are low, and all the food is available to go.

Miss Fanny makes the best meatloaf in the world. Try lots of the side dishes, including cornbread and all the southern style vegetables. Whether we eat in or take out, the friendliness of the people, both eating and working there, is unbeatable.

Miss Fannie's catered my husband's 60th birthday party and the guests are still raving about the food. I am tempted to do it again this year.
