Cloos' Coney Island Hot Dogs seems to have its geography a bit mixed up, but its hot dog heart is in the right place. It advertises Detroit-style, Coney Island hot dogs. The all-beef dogs are shipped direct from Detroit and have a different taste from anything around these parts. Coney Island refers to a style as well as an actual brand -- dogs prepared in this manner include chili, mustard and onions. And to further mix culture and geography, Philly cheese steaks and gyros are also menu staples. Salads are available if you want to create the illusion that you're eating healthy. -- Grant Britt

20 Years of Awesome
By Actlete on 06/23/2008
I first went to CCIHD 20 years ago, the first week it was open. There was a 2 year period when I worked in the Videomax (now Lackluster Video) across the way and ate at CCIHD almost every day for lunch (unless my fraternity brother was tending bar at Rock-o-la and could get me my beers for free). I'll be headed there for lunch today with some co-workers (a long drive from RTP, but one we do at least 2x a year) and we've all been talking about it for weeks. As a preview, I took my family yesterday for dinner. As we left, walking on air with heavy stomachs, my wife and I commented how it was the best food we had in college (yes, she was with me that first visit) and it was still one of the best meals we could have today. Second Empire is great for a celebration, but to feed our souls, there's nothing like Cloos's food. Whether it is his chicken sandwich for my wife, the Philly cheesesteak, the franks, the burgers, the sliders, the fries, or the fact that you can wash it down with a cherrry soda, it doesn't matter. Every meal is a piece of heaven.

Always Fresh - Cooked to Order
By pokey13as on 06/16/2005
Cloos is an outstanding spot for lunch or dinner. The staff is so pleasant and they fix the food to please. It is all cooked fresh so you will have to wait for it to cook. The hotdogs are outstanding --you can get it with or without skin. Dan, the owner, makes the slaw and Greek and Cucumber dressing. He marinates the chicken in his special blend. the ice is shaved and it is a fabulous old time friendly dining experience. You'll want to come back and try each item on the varied menu--Greek salads, sliders, Philly cheese steak sandwiches, pitas, wraps, reubens, and great chili cheese fries! It's worth the wait and worth a trip there.

Horrible

Disgusting place. You should avoid this place at all costs. There are many good places to eat in Mission Valley. This isn't one of them.
