Allen and Son Barbeque looks like your typical barbecue place -- vinyl checkered tablecloths and long wooden tables in a cinderblock building on a country road. Folks of all kinds, from students to surgeons and truckers to teens, occupy the tables. But once you walk in the door and smell the hickory smoke, you know you've found barbecue heaven. Allen and Son dishes up real North Carolina barbecue, slow smoked and doused in a vinegary sauce. Choose from chopped pork, ribs or chicken, accompanied by fresh cole slaw, golden-brown hush puppies, crispy french fries or potato salad. There is a lengthy menu, but most folks head straight for the barbecue. And everyone saves room for delectable desserts like pecan pie and cream-cheese pound cake with cream-cheese frosting. Wash it all down with some sweet tea. Want to relax with your 'cue in front of the TV? Get it to go.

Find it. It's the best

My wife and I retired and moved to the mountains but I miss Allen and Son's BBQ. While I don't think I would move back to Durham...I would move close to be near that great BBQ. And what a great, unassuming place. They don't need inside advertising to let everyone know that they sell BBQ.

The food is reasonable, they give you great portions, and the dessert (I had the cherry cobbler) was wonderful.

The attitude has more vinegar

I first ate in the Pittsboro place while choosing where to live in the Carolina Piedmont. Was impressed with service, food and the experience,. Then bought a home in Orange County fear Allen and Son. Went to eat with much anticipation. Regretted that decision. Now when we want sopme barbecue, we either find out when Bubba and Earl are cooking in Hillsborough, or we go back to Pittsboro. Have tried Allen t hree more time s in Cjhapel Hill. Once got meat that had clearly been left over at least one day, possibly two. Once overchaarged for about half a serving. Once got excessive vinegar klin the sauche. All three times, the a ttitude was totally vinegary. We'll drive back to Pittsoboro from now on, or wait for Bubba and Earl.
