When Piero Potenza moved to the Triangle from New York City in early 2003, he saw that downtown Cary could use a little after-hours life. So he opened Ciao, a quaint and cozy wine bar that, with just 31 seats, warm candlelight wall sconces and European background music, makes you wonder why a place like this is just now making its way to the area. Along with a selection of 20 wines by the glass is a menu of light dishes such as ceviche, shrimp salad served in a martini glass and a host of sandwiches, salads and cheeses. A sample plate of their 13 cheeses, which includes Parmigiano-Reggiano and pecorino, is a great accompaniment to Ciao's ever-changing wine list. The wine bar has no stove, so you can be assured everything is prepared fresh. There is, however, an oven, which is used to bake fresh breads and desserts daily. This is a welcome place to quiet Cary, a place you'll definitely want to visit more than once. -- Erica Hinton

Sweat shop...
By atmsalesnc on 04/10/2006
Last Tuesday evening (4/4/06), my wife and I along with our guests, ambled into Ciao at about 9 PM...what struck us immediately was the smell! It smelled like a sweaty gym sock...but for some reason we chose to stay. We were "greeted" by the surly Mr. Potenza who wore a dirty golf shirt (untucked) and had no interest at all in describing his desserts to us. He was rude and unpleasant. We ordered, ate the desserts which were very good, and bolted for the fresh air. Charming? No. Visit again? Not on your life...

My wife , daughter and I came to Cary to visit my brother between Christmas and New Years and made it a point to stop at Ciao for lunch. We are big wine enthusiasts and were extremely happy to have found Ciao. We had the cheese platters and they were wonderful. We ordered sandwiches that were simply excellant and with the wines... well....superb! Also the Peachy Creme Brulee, and Chocolate Surprise and Tiramisu were so good that we came back for dessert after having dinner at a restaurant in Apex. If you are in Cary DO NOT MISS Ciao!! And Piero is a great gentleman. Wish we had a wine bar this good in Orlando.
