Even if only once in your life, turn a special occasion into a reason to make a reservation at the Fearrington House. Walk up the lit path through perfectly manicured foliage and enter an elegant house. You're immediately led into one of the house's many rooms, each set up with only a few tables. Stark white linens and full place settings establish the formal yet not stiff tone. Fresh flowers and soft candlelight make for an intimate and exceedingly romantic atmosphere. The culinary experience -- a seven-course prix-fixe menu -- begins when the friendly and well-trained waitstaff present you with various baked goodies and freshly whipped herbed butter. First courses may include beef carpaccio with mustard aoili; whipped brie with shaved celery and shallot salad; or jumbo lump crab meat and potato salad. Second course may mean pan-fried goat cheese or poached lobster with champagne foam. For the main course, choose anything from filet mignon or seared scallops to braised lamb shoulder or roasted duck breast with sweet-potato gratin. Desserts reign here, with selections like hot chocolate souffle, vanilla mousse with rhubarb sorbet, and strawberry chiffon. The menu changes seasonally.

It's been many years since Fearington House was a fairly regular treat on my semi-annual visits to Chapel Hill to visit relatives. It is still the stuff that dreams are made of for me. It's just too sad that they have priced themselves out of range for so many people. Still, I have their cookbook and can prepare many of their delicious French/Southern concoctions myself.

Go to Charleston - eat better - pay less
By tc91152 on 02/14/2004
The service was second to none, but that is where it all stopped. If Fearrington House opened in Charleston I dont believe they would still be in business.Their cooks should really do a semester of training on flavoring food with some chefs from Charleston. My wife and I kept on saiding to each other ; "for this price we could gone to charleston, eaten a much better meal in any number of places, and had enough money left over to pay for roundtrip gas,and half the price of a moderate hotel". That is what I intend to do next time, and suqquest all you true romantics do.You'll have a much better time - more 'value added'.
