There aren't many places around like Finch's anymore. Sure, there are places with a diner motif, but they all just popped up in the last decade. Finch's, on the other hand, is the real deal. Located within walking distance to most downtown Raleigh government offices, this since-1945 eatery has a loyal clientele of business folks and families who want a real Southern breakfast or lunch. The griddle fires up at 6AM (7AM on Sundays), when the first patrons begin to arrive for county ham and eggs, corned beef hash, pecan waffles, raspberry pancakes with warm maple syrup and a diner favorite, creamed chip beef. At lunchtime, it's all about the daily special that's hard to beat price-wise, never topping $6. Favorites are the baked chicken with rice and gravy, pot roast with carrots and potatoes, and meatloaf. Specials are served with two sides, such as fried okra and stewed apples, and of course, bottomless iced tea. Sandwiches, burgers, fried seafood and salads round out the menu.
