Step into Four Square, housed in a 1908 Victorian-era mansion, for one of the Triangle's most sophisticated dining experiences. This Durham establishment serves fresh, globally influenced contemporary American cuisine in seven intimate dining rooms and at its cozy six-stool bar. The house showcases many original details such as leaded and stained glass windows, eight fireplaces with the original wood, tiled and mirrored mantelpieces, a walnut staircase and heart pine floors. The grounds host vegetable, herb and perennial gardens. On warm nights, request a table on the screened-in wraparound porch (equipped with ceiling fans) to take in lovely views of the flowers. The menu at Four Square changes monthly to take advantage of the freshest seasonal produce, most coming from local farmers, meaning you're almost guaranteed something new at each visit. Past items include appetizers such as smoked chicken, andouille gumbo and pan-seared strawberry grouper. Entrees range from ostrich to king salmon with crab to Alaskan halibut. -- Erica Hinton

Top notch !!!

I have been to Four Square several times with both large and small parties. Anything from 2-60 people and the food, service, and attitude have always been top notch. In a town with a handful of really noteworthy places this one comes in near the top. If they have any type seafood featured...try it. The Alaskan Halibut I have had here was simply the best. Enjoy!

The cold hostess
By andriotazz on 07/30/2004
The hostess does not seem to like new customers! Regulars are OK (don’t ask how one can become a regular without starting off as a new customer). Or could it be that we did not sound Southern?

From the moment we walked in, she never cracked a smile once (talk about a COLD exterior!) and seemed annoyed to have us there. She did not like us asking for a special table (for a special occasion). But come the next customers (regulars), she couldn't stop laughing with them. They were even given a special appetizer (not on the menu) made especially for them.

However, the evening was greatly improved by the fact that our waiter was amazing. He was the total opposite of the hostess. Warm, helpful and very enthusiastic. If it hadn’t been for him I would have seriously complained to the manager (as long as it wasn’t THAT hostess, as we know how we would have been treated).

It was the worst place I can think of to have gone and celebrated a special occasion. In addition, with the other customers getting such special treatment (the chef came and sat with them, the hostess came and talked at length with them, etc.) it only added to our annoyance.

The one star is because although I would like to give 4square a negative mark, the waiter himself deserves five stars, henc eht average come to 1 star.

Over-priced for what you get.
