In the past 10 years, Mama Dip has gone from someone who cooked up Southern-fried chicken, barbecue and ribs in Chapel Hill to first a local celebrity appearing on PBS, then to a national one as a guest on 'Good Morning America,' and then to a celeb sharing the camera with the likes of FoodTV and 'Gourmet' magazine star Sara Moulton. Even beyond all that glitz, she's somewhat of a local legend. The story goes that Mama worked in several restaurants in town, even with her mother-in-law in a small takeout space, until 1976 when she opened her own place with just $64 -- $40 for food and $24 to make change. These days, Mama Dip's is a thriving business, and the restaurant moved across the street to a bigger and newer building in 1999. Start the day off here with a hearty breakfast of chicken and gravy, country ham, omelets or pecan pancakes, most served with eggs and all served with grits or hashbrowns and either biscuits or toast. For dinner or lunch, begin with an order of pickled beets or fried green tomatoes, and then move down a never-ending list of truly Southern entrees. Barbecue, whether it's pulled pork, beef ribs or chicken, is a popular choice, as is the fried chicken (dark meat for real Southerners), chicken livers and fried pork chops. And no one wants to miss Mama's real down-home meals: chicken, dumplings and chitlins. All meals are served with two sides; pick from fried okra, lima beans, potato salad, applesauce and yams. If you can't save room for dessert, then take a piece home: The pecan and coconut custard pies, as well as the bread and banana puddings, are tops.

Mama Dip's Cookbook is best!
By mmammalissa on 04/10/2007
I have never had the pleasure of visiting Mama Dip's restaurant, but I have the book and it is out of this world. I origiannly bought the book because of a spoon bread receipe and a few other's that appeared to be the exact receipe of my great-grandmother's and it was! I was so excited as she has passed and I thought I would never be able to recreate those dishes. I agree the potatoe pie receipe I had to dress up quite a bit, but the meatloaf will blow your mind :)! So, for those of you who were displeased with the restuarant and love southern, country cooking, try the cookbook. You are sure to be well pleased.

Disappointed
By divine1sfavor914 on 07/09/2005
My husband and I visited Mama Dips two weeks ago. I have longed to visit there for years so while in the area we had to stop in. We were disappointed. The tea was not sweet. The green tomatoes were lukewarm when served. The sweet potato pie was not good at all. The pork chops were not good either. We were expecting a whole lot more. I asked was Mama Dip in and of course she was not. I think she should oversee this place a little better. Not sure if the quality of the food suffers because she is not around. The staff was not that hospitable either. We are sorry that we went there. For the prices that they charge I would expect a lot more.

Good food not deserts
By tinyandreba on 04/24/2005
Reba and I enjoyed the food very much. We enjoyed the roast beef, collar greens fried Chitlins and green beans. I was disappointed with the sweet potatoe pie, but loved the Black berry Cobbler. We will go again, but not for the desserts. Tim and Reba

over-rated

We were very disappointed in quality of the food at Mama Dipps. Her fame precedes her but how she got it we don't know. We had two pieces of dried fried chicken with the side veggies served on very small dishes. The veggies were mushy. They also have the nerve to charge for EACH refill of soda. We will not be going there again and discourage anyone who thinks they are going to get real southern cooking.
