You've got to love a barbecue joint where the self-declared slogan is ''a great place to get porked.'' Whether it's because of the smirk-inducing slogan, the excellent food, the friendly service or a combination of all three, owners Jerry and Kathy Hart have been developing a loyal customer base in Raleigh for years now. Locals call the Eastern style, North Carolina barbecue at Ole Time the best they've ever had and with reason. The sauce -- a perfect blend of vinegar and peppers -- is a secret family recipe, passed down from generation to generation. The pork and chicken barbecue is astounding, although the hush puppies and fried apple sticks are also popular. Ole Time's decor is clearly of the ''joint'' variety: It's just a handful of booths and a counter, tiny enough for patrons to hear the kitchen banter; but this joint is not without its appeal. The pig decor, featuring pig paintings, drawings and stuffed animals, is a hometown favorite. And Jerry and Kathy are on a first- name basis with most of the customers.

Typical NC BBQ

Typical NC barbque. Not for the sweet lovers. Pulled pork and baby back ribs were great. Be aware only two types of BBQ sauce here. Tangy or Hot. If you like either you’ll love it!

Some food is alright...but it's the rest of the package that is below par

If you like Eastern Carolina barbecue, then yes...Jerry's ribs and pork are just fine. The rest of the menu however - to include his Breakfast...is well, just "filler" so to speak - with not much taste. Of course, you can smother all the other stuff with salt, pepper and his barbecue sauce. But it's the heavy smoke in his locale - with people smoking at random, and then to have the owner - Jerry (sorry, forgot his last name) stand right in front of you blowing cigarrette smoke in your face....well, sorry that was enough for me and after just two visits, I said enough was enough. So if you like a smoky atmosphere, lots of good ole' boys talkin', and hearin' Jerry (who has a very loud froggy voice) talk away...then this is the place for you. But I've tasted much better.....much better. But I guess that's why we all have preferences. Bill
