Bring your heartiest appetite and get ready to go down on the farm. Big Ed's is known for serving up hearty breakfasts and lunches amidst a lively crowd and atmosphere that makes you think you're visiting a farmer's museum. Before Ed Watkins owned this popular morning and early afternoon haunt, he farmed tobacco, and there's evidence of this all over the place. Overhead, on the walls and on the wooden columns, hang vintage pieces of farming equipment. Some are obviously identifiable, while others have you talking. But that's OK, because after fresh biscuits or cornbread arrive at your table, you'll want to take a couple of minutes to soak up the environment. An unexpected treat is the complimentary dessert, usually banana pudding or a fruit cobbler, which arrives at your table before your meal begins. Menu selections go right along with the country boy atmosphere -- sausage, bacon, pancakes, grits, eggs and country ham in the AM; fried chicken, meatloaf and chicken and dumplings at lunch. Vegetarians can order a vegetable plate, but if you're devout, ask if meat is a part of the flavoring.
