When you're not in the mood to stack up the charcoal, Cook Out is your next best option. Here, the skip the notion of wimpy burgers that most fast food joints serve, and instead expect one that's big, juicy and has just-off-the-grill smoked flavor. In fact, it's that smoke in the air that you can smell from a mile away. As for toppings, the lettuce is always crispy, the tomatoes taste like you picked them yourself and the chili is never greasy. Some would argue that the burgers here aren't even the star of the show, instead arguing for the milkshakes. Try the peanut butter for a real treat, or seasonal selections like watermelon and eggnog. Fries are the thick-cut kind; you can kick up the flavor by dusting them with Cajun spices. Cook Out also serves up barbecue with hushpuppies, hot dogs and onion rings. Another thing that makes this place so popular is the price -- it's comparable to other fast food places, but you'll never want to hit up McDonald's or Hardee's again. Note that Cook Out is drive-thru or walk-up only, so be prepared to get it to go.

My friends and I come here at least once a week, usually after our weekly Campus Crusade for Christ meetings at UNCC. The food is absolutely amazing and the milk shakes are to die for. Best of all, it fits the budge of poor college students.

Recent Opening in Gastonia, NC
By dukefanashley on 01/04/2007
A Cook Out just opened up here my hometown of Gastonia, NC, which is about 15 miles from Charlotte. I had heard everyone around talking about how good they thought the food was. I'm not all that big on chargrilled taste (I kinda lost my taste for it when I was pregnant with my son), but I tried a burger anyway. It was GREAT! It was thick, juicy, the lettuce and tomatoe were fresh AND it didn't have an overkill of the chargrilled taste, it was just right. Everyone thought Burger King had the best burgers around here (as far as fast food goes), but now Cook Out is the place to go. Also, at first I thought it would be an expensive place because any "new" place like that opens up it usually is pricey BUT Cook Out is NOT AT ALL. They ACTUALLY are cheaper than Burger King or McDonalds, who in recent months have upped their prices. I love their burgers, the fries were great as well, I love the fresh cut and they were just crispy enough. Also, loved the hushpuppies (which by the way is very cool to be able to get from a fast food joint) and their slaw is great too. Now, most importantly the milkshakes. FABULOUS!! I thought that when Sonic opened up here in Gastonia that they had the best milkshakes for the price BUT NOT NOW, Cook Out takes the prize. I have tried Vanilla, Peach Cobbler and my FAVES so far are Strawberry Shortcake, Banana Pudding and the BEST OF ALL FRESH PEANUT BUTTER. So, ANYONE thinking they want fast food tonight, I'd say head out to Cook Out because they are the best fast food joint to come to this town PERIOD!!
