Taking residence at a historic home in downtown Raleigh is one of the city's finest dining institutions. Second Empire immediately conjures up ideas of superb cuisine coupled with a class-act setting. The culinary magic takes place inside the beautifully restored Dodd-Hinsdale House, an 1879 Second Empire Victorian. Upon entering, take notice of the heavily ornate architecture, a style developed in France under Napoleon III. Inside, the elegance of that time continues with heart pine floors, leaded glass panels, wide arched passages and a grand solid walnut stairway. The food is equally impressive. Chef Daniel Schurr creates a monthly changing menu of delicately constructed creations, with such appetizers as lamb shank and barley broth, sea scallop ceviche and baby snow pea shoot salad, and pan-fried Manchester quail. Grilled five-spice poussin, roasted gulf red snapper in a bouillabaisse sauce and sauteed veal rib chop with duck confit and a beet veal reduction all are exotic main-course offerings. Downstairs in the tavern, a more casual menu includes such items as roasted duck quesadillas, shrimp risotto and seafood paella. Extra special occasions may call for dinner at the chef's table, where two to eight guests can dine right in the kitchen, with the chef taking you personally through every course with paired wines. -- Erica Hinton

First of all, the restaurant hallway stinks. I ordered a seafood dish. One mussel was bad, which made the whole dish stink. After the problem was reported, the manager simply took the order from the bill and did not even apologize...

A friend and I went here for a special dinner. I was left wanting for most of the meal. First of all: our table was not ready at the reservation time. The Hosts seemed confused as to what to do with us while we waited. One suggested we wait in the bar assuring us that the table would be ready in two minutes. The other suggested we just stand there and wait. We went downstairs to tour the over full and noisy bar area. After several minutes headed back upstairs only to be pushed off into the entry way couch to wait. (like scolded children). Our waiter was friendly and compentent. Service was a little slow for a Saturday Night meal and service was not ghostly like it should have been for a 5 star establishment. The food was worthy of 5 Stars. I have eaten in Five stars before that make you feel welcome and your patronage appreciated, I did not feel that way here. Overall I felt I overpaid grosely for the Second Empire Experience.
