Located in a basement space, Ipanema Cafe is in a prime position to serve the students and faculty of Virginia Commonwealth University. The perfect lunch spot, this coffeehouse-like hangout features terrific food and service. The food is fun and varied, an ideal combination for the restaurant's young and hip crowd. It's also an affordable place where students can take their parents when they're in town -- especially if tastes lean toward healthy or vegetarian. Before you step inside, you get a taste of what's on the menu from the ever-present chalkboard that sits outside. Not everything is low-fat, however, when you consider the pasta dishes made with cheese and/or cream, the sandwiches made on focaccio, and the sinful, must-have sweet potato French fries. There are designated smoking and nonsmoking sections, but the cafe is a tiny spot, so don't be surprised if the smoke wafts even as you're enjoying your soup and salad.
