In the West Plaza shopping center just a few blocks in from I-10 W., Ritmo Latino sits in a nondescript sea-blue building surrounded by bakeries, fruit stands, bingo parlors and taquerias. The bar has a rowdy rep to contend with, but judging by the faithful crowd that frequents the place, it's clear patrons have no problem setting their concerns aside. Opening its doors only on weekends and during evening hours, Ritmo lures by setting the stage on Friday evenings with live Latin, Tejano and regional acts. DJs take over on Saturdays and Sundays, and the weekend is bookended by a dizzying bikini contest and show. Women looking to make a few bucks before the new week begins don the thong and give spectators some eye candy.
