Hung Fong has been serving Moo Goo Gai Pan to the Alamo City since 1939. And while it has inspired a host of other Asian restaurants to stake a claim in the portion of Broadway that runs between Eleanor and Hildebrand, it remains the most opulently kitsch, as if it were plucked from the set of Jack Nicholson's 'Chinatown.' Dining inside the dark red and gilt rooms are San Antonio natives of all stripes who seem to have a special nostalgia for the Family Dinners (choose from column A and from column B), and the Sesame Chicken. Perched smack in the middle of the most colorful stretch of Broadway, Hung Fong has weathered the rise and fall of the neighborhood's fortunes (on an upswing once again). She's a grand dame with a bit of polish left in her yet. -- E. M. Wolff

Tried and True Chinese Food
By gumgoblin on 05/16/2006
The food here is excellent and they have a good variety of entry to choose from off of the menu. The decor is a little dated, but it does give it that feel of actually eating in an old Chinatown restaurant. My two personal favorite dishes are the Chicken Egg Foo Young and Chicken Chow Mien. As a kid before my taste buds had become more developed, I really loved their lemon chicken. To comment on the previous reviewer, if you actually eat "real" Chinese food with any frequency, you would know the high vegetable to chicken ratio in the dish is what makes Chinese food "Chinese food". As for the chicken being tough, every dish I eat the cuts are so small, I cant see as its possible, unless maybe you are talking about a chicken dish, in which case you should just go to HEB and buy the lemon chicken at their cafe.

Been twice. The first time order a chicken dish and the chicken was so dry it was impossible to eat. Sort of chicken jerky that you don't chew. Someone told me they were really good and suggested we try again, they even said they'd pay to get me to try again. So the second time I ordered something different but also a chicken dish. It was bland and so overloaded with vegtables that I could not find the chicken. I get it that chicken isn't cheap but I'd rather pay a little more and get chicken in my chicken dishes.

Always been good. Been going off and on since 1968. Over the years the wait staff has always been near the rude side. Food excellent!!
