Sometimes the quest for great Texas barbecue takes you off the beaten path. A case in point is Bar-B-Q Patio, located in far southwest San Antonio. A rundown wooden wagon on the front lawn, large picnic tables on the tree-shrouded deck and whitewashed posts and window trim contribute to the eatery's countrified atmosphere. Inside the small dining room, tables with red-checkered coverings provide enough elbowroom to manhandle one of the Patio's tender and tasty barbecue plates. The restaurant's brisket has earned raves from Texas Monthly magazine. Part of the reason may lie in the almost scientific approach to cooking and smoking meat that Bar-B-Q Patio owner Maurice Kemp and his team swear by. Apparently, the delicate balance of mesquite, oak and pecan wood used is key. Pork ribs, turkey and chicken round out the meat offerings. A popular specialty is the Big Papa -- an Idaho No. 1 baked potato loaded with butter, cheese or onion and a quarter-pound of your favorite chopped meat. Sides include baked beans seasoned with polish sausage and cole slaw enhanced with celery seed and a sweet and creamy dressing. You may want save room for dessert, though. Peach and apple cobblers, pecan pie and Texas sheet cake brownies with chopped pecans are worth a little strategic self-control.

I have been eating her a few years now. Maurice is the reason the food is so good. Never disappointed.

Out of Food...
By imcooal on 02/17/2008
Read about the restaurant and seemed to get good reviews. I decided to check it out as San Antonio is in DIRE need of some decent BBQ. Bill Millers, Toms Ribs, and O'Grady's are a joke; and, personally, I can't believe they're still in business. But I digress, so anyway, I took my wife and friend to the restaurant over my lunch hour. Had to drive about 15 minutes but was hoping it would be worth it. We were all looking forward to some scrumptous BBQ. We arrived, got out of the car, headed for the front door and was greeted by a sign, "out of brisket." Seemed to be a little rinky-dinky place. So much for our quest for good BBQ. And, please, don't say "Rudy's"! It's over-rated; the brisket is good but sitting on dirty tables or outside with the flies ain't my cup 'o tea; their sides also suck. The quest continues!

A friday night favorite
By kimberlyslocum on 04/11/2007
BBQ Patio is a place to go Friday nights, especially friday nights before the Southwest High School football games. The food is amazing and the BBQ sauce is to die for! I always order a chop BBQ sandwich and place tons and tons of BBQ sauce. The beans are amazing too!! If you want some GOOD BBQ then head down to Von Ormy and eat there... GOOD FOOD, GOOD PEOPLE! The owner is AWESOME and the food is even better!!

Don't Believe The Facade...
By mmcneail on 03/21/2007
The physical condition is awful (LOOSE FLOOR/PATION BOARDS for example) When it rains, it pours (INSIDE)! Toilet paper was scarce in that bathroom (THERE'S ONLY ONE). Often out of menu items (DESSERT'S especially) - not due to high sale volumn.
