For more than a decade, this unassuming lounge with its upholstered chairs has brought San Diego not just the mainstreamers everyone sees on MTV and BET, but also the independent artists whose quest is to become the Next Big Thing -- and who sometimes succeed. Indeed, several of today's superstars -- Kid Rock, KORN and System of a Down among them -- once played the Brick back when no one knew their names. Brick By Brick came into being by succeeding the Spirit in 1985, and it has been a rock 'n' roll good time ever since. Sure, the dingy environment needed help, but that arrived when the place was refurbished into the high-ceilinged, stark-lit hangout you see today. The clientele's distaste for fashion labels, art posers and everything Britney-fied has remained in tact, however. A solid string of theme nights and drink specials keep the crowd coming back, making Brick one of San Diego's most immutable institutions.
