Caliph is a diamond in the rough, a Moroccan-inspired bar filled with songs and solidarity. The place is packed with flair -- so much so that the flashy decor in the small space assaults the senses, straddling the border between gorgeous and gaudy. Doorways and mirrors shaped like minarets circle a vinyl-padded bar. An elaborately framed oil painting of Caliph's namesake, lost for decades and only recently found, hangs on the back wall. Everything is centered around the piano, and the main attractions at Caliph are the nightly performances by local artists, during which patrons are often encouraged to sing along. The performers recently collaborated on a catchy CD sold at the bar, with all proceeds going to charity. Although the patrons are mainly mature men, the bartenders are young and could be models. But you'll be pleased to discover that everyone you talk to, from staff to staples to newbies, is extroverted and entertaining, not to mention downright nice. The drink menu is varied. Try the sizeable Espresso Martini.

No more Di Santi
By DipsyDmstr on 07/25/2008
An old timer, really old timer, who returned to San Diego would be in for a big surprise. Until the mid 70s the Caliph was owned by four former fishermen, all named Di Santi (not sure of the spelling). Mostly busnessmen and women attended. Then it was bought Richard (forgot the surname). Still the old crowd came back. Mostly the old timers, mostly straight, sat at one end, the emerging gays at the other. If one of the old timers sat at the gay end by mistake (or otherwise) the bartender would likely say, "keep your hands out of his lap, he's straight." Somewhere along the line they hired a woman. She wore a t-shirt which said "In case of rape turn me over." She claimed that when the gay bartender relieved her he turned it over. Dipsey Dumpster
