Associated with a local veterinarian, FreeFlight is a petite tropical oasis for exotic birds. Filled with cockatoos and parrots of every sort, the pocket-sized haven is tucked behind the Del Mar Racetrack in the curve of Jimmy Durante Boulevard. After you deposit your admission in the collection box and make use of the provided hand-cleaner (birds don't want people germs), you enter a shady garden filled with ferns and trees. Birds are stationed on perches and in cages, some calling out to be held and petted, others simply waiting to be admired. Watch for the sign that indicates the "bad bird" section; not really bad, the birds in this area just aren't for holding or petting. Peer into the windows of the "nursery" near the exit to see who's hatched -- these babies are so ugly they're cute. FreeFlight is the perfect "cheep" date with your kids, and the fun is natural and hands-on. The staff patiently answers questions and provides instruction on how to hold and feed the birds; they also provide cautionary advice on how to keep your fingers from being nipped (a very rare occurrence) and your buttons from being munched (not so very rare). All proceeds go toward the care and support of the birds, many of which have been discarded or have out-lived their owners.
