The Del Mar Hilton enjoys two key features that make it a no-brainer choice for folks visiting the famed Del Mar Racetrack and Fairgrounds: location (the best) and the Triple Crown Dining Room (best steaks ever). The hotel is right across the street from the racetrack, allowing guests to make the stroll or short drive over in minutes. The location also makes a good base camp for any visitor to the City with Sol: 20 minutes south gets you downtown shopping and culture, 20 minutes north gets you the funky and fun beach towns of North County. The Temecula wine country and Julian's charming rustic shopping are both within an hour's drive, as is Tijuana and other south-of-the border excursions. The hotel has large rooms with lots of business-traveler must-haves, including desks and dataports. The decor leans a little heavily on California contemporary -- lots of almost-tropical prints in dusty pastels and pale wood -- which doesn't much tie-in to the hotel's stand-out Tudor architecture, but all is still very soothing and appealing. Although there aren't any tennis courts, there is an exercise room, jogging track and truly delightful heated pool and spa. The bell captain cheerfully accommodates the traveling golfer and can arrange a round or two at any number of local courses.
