If this place consisted of either its upstairs or downstairs floor only, it'd still be a terrific bar; the two together, however, make it one of San Diego's ultimate bars. The Pennant never appears on anybody's "Best Bar" list, because its old, and kind of run-down, and is hardly wondering about its chic quotient. Locals cherish the spectacular rooftop area, with the tacky glued-pebble floor. The bar and the televisions complement the open-air California vibe, conspiring to make The Pennant pretty much the ultimate rooftop kick-back locale. Don't be too quick to leave the downstairs though. There's a couple of pool tables, an electronic dart board, a juke and a grill serving all manner of bar foods -- but you can get that stuff anywhere. What you are not ever likely to see elsewhere is a bar with this kind of inlaid-wood workmanship. Check it out: The surface of the vast, rectangular bar is divided into sections about 18-inches long, each of which contains a separate '60s art-deco-style scene done with inlaid wood. Incredible! And somehow, the fact that folks are still slamming down their dice cups and spilling beer all over that surface makes it all the more endearing.
