If the Gaslamp bars and nightclubs were the Royal Family, Star Bar would be the boozy old uncle everybody keeps trying to push off the terrace. It's the place time forgot, or just ignored. Either way, the Star is a weird enclave, with its red carpet (that hasn't been cleaned in so long it's probably archeologically significant), red bar stools, red booths and red ceiling. Combine the redness with the gold and silver tinsel strung thoughout, knock back a few drinks at happy hour, and you might just think you're inside some crazy Christmas ornament. The drinks are stiff and cheap, and for decades the Star is where hardcore downtown old-timers have shuffled to hunch over the bar and disappear into their glasses. Meanwhile, the women who now run the place are scampering about in the semi-darkness, calling everybody "Joe" and speaking shrilly into their cell phones. Welcome to another planet.

Avoid this Place
By HT2JAKE on 06/12/2008
Contrary to most reviews here, if you are smart you will avoid this place. I live in San Diego and recently this place has been cited by the city for numerous health code infractions and exposure to TB. Need I say more.

star bar was better before...
By sdborn1904 on 08/03/2007
it was better before a transvestite starting running it. i'm surprised abc hasn't shut them down yet. all i can say is that you shouldnt blame the bartenders or bouncers for being so grouchy cuz they obviously work for a total freakshow of a bar owner...i wouldn't spend any more money in there to help that he/she pay for anymore plastic surgery.

Not the typical "Gaslamp" bar
By littlkittysdca on 06/25/2007
I'll never forget the first time I walked into the Star Bar and ordered two drinks- a Heinekin and a vodka Redbull- handed the bartendress a $20 and got a $10 and change back. Hmmm... did she charge me for just the cocktail? Did she accidentaly give me the wrong change? NOPE. Thats the Star Bar. Best dive bar south of El Cajon Blvd. Beware: if your looking for a pretencious, snobby Gaslamp bar with a $20 cover where everyone is going to be really impressed with your Gucci purse and $300 shoes- and greasy-types offer you Crystal at their VIP booths- go elsewhere. If your looking for cheap stiff drinks and down to earth drinking companions- on duct tape covered barstools- look no further.
