A primo destination for gourmands and very-special-occasion diners for decades, Mr. A's is still going strong as a bastion of exquisite food and service with the most breathtaking views of the city skyline. In 2001, French-born restaurateur Bertrand Hug bought the landmark restaurant and hired decorator David (Roppongi) Robinson to modernize the interior, retiring the dark, velvety reds for a more creamy, lighter atmosphere, accessorized with stunning contemporary floral arrangements, beautiful drapes and a touch of marble flooring. New or old, if the walls could talk, they would give accounts of numerous marriage proposals in front of the grand windows with the sparkling city below. "Part bistro, part haute" best describes the food. Working with restaurant-mandated Chino Farms' vegetables and seasonal seafood, diners choose from what essentially boils down to American cuisine with French and Mediterranean accents. While the appetizers are far more interesting, you can find entrees, in the upper-$20 range, such as pan-roasted salmon and fashionable bass, resting predictably on heaps of salty mashed potatoes or vegetable purees. Lunchtime salads and sandwiches are excellent, and with the scenery, it's a good place to negotiate a contract or clinch a deal. For couples who love to "do" dessert and coffee, pastry chef Herve Raber's lavender creme brulee takes you back to the romance of the southern French provinces.

THE WORST OF THE WORST
By jzirlin75 on 02/07/2008
My husband and I asked two other couples to join us for restaurant week. It was a COMPLETE BAIT AND SWITCH! They changed the menu at the last minue from Sashimi Hamachi or Carpaccio of Beef, or Arugula salad with goat cheese...to mac and cheese or beet salad or lobster soup!!. When I asked for the manager...I did not get him/her. When asked to speak to the head chef...they simply said NO. I was given a business card of the head of operations/marketing to talk to the next day. She was SO RUDE!!! They are all complete snobs who clearly rely on their view and NO customer service. I fear they don't care about repeat business since they must attract out of towners. I called the head of restaurant week to complain about this experience, and she said her phone has been ringing off the hook with complaints about their "bait and switch" and complete lack of service and rude manner. PLEASE DO NOT DINE HERE!

Very Disappointed

My friends and I went to Mister A's as part of San Diego's restaurant week. This is a week where San Diego's best restaurants serve a 3 course meal at a set price to attract new diners. My friends and I love to fine dine and we chose Mister A's as a new place to try. I have been reading the reviews of Mister A's and was very excited. The good : The views and ambiance are amazing. The restaurant is on the 12th floor and has a panoramic view of the downtown and San Diego harbor. They have excellent window seating as well as an outside patio to enjoy a drink before or after your meal. The service is also very good. The staff gives you a real fine dining experience and is very attentive to the diners. The bad : The food was very disappointing. I expected the executive chef to impress us and want us coming back for more. I ordered the Kobe beef, as this is a type of meat that I don't get to indulge in much. To my surprise, the meat was cold and the bernaise sauce was bland. The steak was also too tough for me. I realize Kobe beef is supposed to be cooked rare (I've had it before), but I was surprised that I wasn't asked how I would like it prepared. The potatoes were also undercooked and didn't have much flavor. I ate about 6 bites of the main course. The desert was okay, I had a creme Brule. In the end, the rave reviews did not meet my expectations and I will not be coming back. For the amount of money I ended up spending, I felt ripped off. Go there for the ambiance and a drink but enjoy a meal at some of the other fine restaurants in San Diego.
