The big grey building in Pacific Beach looks like a law firm, or perhaps a dentist's office at first glance -- then you notice the endless stream of hungry-looking folks going in and out with takeout bags happily in hand. What started as a wholesale business by a "bona fide" fisherman has become a seafood lover's dream restaurant and market. This is the restaurant that the Fishhouse Veracruz chain aspires to be. Sashimi quality, super-fresh fish is simply and elegantly prepared. Most dishes are straightforward, with a few detours into Nuevo Latino cuisine. Must-haves include the soy-ginger Chilean seabass, the blackened ahi with a delectable ruby rare center, the superb crab cakes, calamari and a sublime entree of steamed mussels and clams that wallow in a garlic sauce begging to be soaked up with crusty sourdough bread. The decor has mercifully avoided over-precious "fishing" kitsch and instead focused on classy sea-going prints, candlelight and cleanliness. The dinner crowd is a mix of families and casual date-night folks; lunch time fills up with local students and worker bees. A full fish market is on the premises, so you can buy and take home the same fresh seafood served in the restaurant.

Good fresh seafood!

This place is soooo good for seafood and fairly inexpensive. I live right by it and they are constantly getting fresh deliveries. The Seared Ahi with asian vegetables is one of the best things on the menu!

Living in both the Bay area and San Diego, this is the best seafood restaurant in both locales. Fish is always fresh, excellently prepared. I have eaten there at least two times per month for the last 7 years and I have never had a bad meal. Great!! Great!! Great!!

You MUST GO!
By merebearlalak on 05/05/2006
I gave this 5 stars because I think it is a really unique idea in restaurants and cooking. My hands-down favorite seafood in SD is Blue Point in the gaslamp quarter- however, this is a different genre of restaruant and I dont think it's fair to compare apples to oranges. That being said, we ate there (ignoring the review telling us to go to point loma seafoods, which looks like the person just doesn;t know what they are talking about in terms of good food)- we had a wonderful experience, even with our 1 year old in tow! YES it is family freidnly, but they serve lovely cuisine and I highly reccomend it. I had the Clam Chowder- it was wonderful and I could've eten it all night long, I then had the Crab Cake appetizer, which was very good, and had alot of wonderful crab in the cake, I then had the vegitarian risotto- wow! this was very well done! the veggies were fresh and wonderful, and the risotto was perfect, cheesy and creamy but not a starchy mess like many others that I have tried. We didn't have dessert- but the menu looked great. They have some really different and unique dishes that you don't often see (like balsamic strawberries for dessert). To anyone who appriciates good food, and is willing to try something beyond fish n' chips (although they do have these on the menu!) when it comes to seafood then you need to give the fishery a go. Note: this is a tiny restaurant, not really made to accomodate large parties, and parking is every man for himself! however, casual dress is fine (I wore jeans!) Have fun!
