A view of rolling green hills dotted with Torrey pines and the ocean in the backdrop persuades most people that their dinner was as first-rate as their view. That won't happen at A.R. Valentien. Granted, the high wooden-beamed ceilings and handmade stained glass lanterns are attractive. And, named for the early California artist, the restaurant is home to many of his paintings and vases, but the true art at A.R. Valentien is the food. Executive chef Jeff Jackson is a bit of a vegetable Nazi and only allows seasonal prime produce on the menu. Because of this decree, the entrees change to complement the vegetables. Menu favorites include the appetizer of tuna carpaccio with horseradish and crispy capers. Entrees such as the braised veal cheeks and the filet mignon can be seen on many tables any night of the week. For dessert, try panna cotta with strawberry jelly and strawberry sorbet. The prices are on the exorbitant side, but fortunately the wine list won't hit your wallet as hard.

Exquisite Artisan's Table
By jhroth on 03/30/2006
A Foodie's Delight -- At a table for 7, we had four courses & matched wines @$75 each. 1: Charcuterie(s), celery root remoulade; designer beets and artichokes; salad with citrus & avocado. 2: Roasted lamb, boulangere potatoes; smoked sable fish, Savoy cabbage, pancetta, capers & sultanas, orange cauliflower. 3: Cheese -- crottin with warm preserved kumquats. 4: Dessert: Sun shine cake, strawberries and star anise syrup. How could you not love this? We ate and ate and ate. Attentive service including briefings by chef & sommelier, unbelievable food, great setting. This was high art & we'd do it again in a heartbeat.

The two stars are for the nice view and the great service, otherwise the food was overpriced, overcooked, and overrated. Very disappointing.

My wife and I went there fro our 3 year anniversary. DO NOT WAIST YOUR TIME NOT MONEY. The food was NOT good at all. She got halibut that tasted fishier than salmon. Had to send it back. The people WAY TOO snooty. Major disappointment.
