San Diego restaurants tend to close early, but City Delicatessen, located in the heart of Hillcrest at one of the busiest intersections in the city, stays open late, late, late, just in case you need a fat slice of cheesecake to soothe a bad case of unrequited love. All the pastries are baked on the premises, and the cakes rise toward the ceiling; some think the desserts outclass the main events, many of which would not earn points from New York deli mavens. Even so, if you're hungry for corned beef on rye or a mountain of chopped liver with Kosher dills on the side, this is a good, convenient, affordable choice. The restaurant does not provide formal entertainment, but given it's location on a strategic corner in eclectic Hillcrest, there's plenty of free entertainment provided by the parade of uniquely dressed denizens passing constantly by the windows.

Take the Cannoli....
By connieadam on 02/15/2007
Take the cannoli...leave the attitude. Servers here display "Too- Much-Information" about their own (dare I say "personal"?) sex lives. Some nights it looks like it's Halloween for all the "accessories" servers wear to advertise their sexual preferences. If you're a quiet, unassuming customer, who actually came in for some food, you'll have to throw yourself in the path of a waiter as they wisk by fortified by way-too-much free caffeine to remember you even exist...is that what they mean by New York Style Deli??? We go back because the food is good to very good with larger-than-average portions, enough for take home for a second meal that tastes just as good tomorrow. Finding very-late night dining or dining on holidays in San Diego is a plus. Finding parking in this area is worse-than-difficult and they won't give you any hints or even validate a local parking ticket...but the cannoli is worth it if you happen to be walking by. Overall, this is a much-much-better choice than Corvette's Diner in the same area, but don't take your kids until they institute a uniform for the wait staff and add a "Don't ask / Don't tell" restaurant policy. Please!!!

just a good all around deli/diner. Eat here all the time. Food is great and so is the service. Everyone thinks they are a deli maven. Here you'll find the best soups in town. And everything is home made.

Having found that San Diego is not very receptive to the "single diner", I've found my solution. The food is good and the service varies but is passable and they never make me feel uncomfortable about eating alone.

This isn't what I would consider a true deli. The atmosphere is sort-of prefabricated and the menu is on the pricey side. The food and service was very good, though $10+ was a little high for a basic French Dip sandwich and a cherry Coke. I doubt I'd go back again.
