Susan Lew must love jewelry, because her award-winning Emerald Restaurant's younger sister store was named Pearl. As with Emerald, the fare is upscale Chinese, specializing in fabulous dim sum (served until 3PM daily) and seafood. Lew's specific goal with Pearl is to introduce guests to the contemporary face of China's ever-evolving cuisine, drawing away from most restaurants' reach for tradition. The menu reflects the current trends in the cuisine of the finest restaurants in the most cosmopolitan Chinese cities. You will find exciting, extravagant dishes containing shark fin and abalone, as well as items that require a little bravery from the Western palate, like pickled jellyfish or sizzling eel brochette. Items are served family-style, so order a varied assortment to include the most flavors. Pork steamed in brandy and clams steamed in spicy wine broth are sure recipes for a happy evening. There are plenty of familiar meals, including kung pao chicken, fried rice and orange beef, but the mastery of such dishes as pan-fried lamb chops and lobster baked with garlic demand a step out of your comfort zone. The airy dining room gazes tranquilly out over a duck-filled pond.

good food!!
By luvgoodmeals on 05/09/2009
Food was excellent, each dish ordered was fantastic. Never been let down every time we go - it's a restaurant that we can always depend on for a great meal. True, the staff may not always stop by as frequently as some folks would hope, but it's usually because they are so busy....and last I checked, busy is good, particularly in these economic times. The staff there is always friendly and courteous. Looking forward to going back again for a great meal! :-) Thanks, Pearl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Worst Ever, complete rip-off.

It is quite evident that those who praise Pearl’s Chinese restaurant have never eaten at a good Chinese restaurant before. The dumplings, eggrolls, and other dishes taste as if they came straight out of the freezer, heated and allowed to sit for hours until served, making them tasteless and leather-like. Susan Lew should be very, very ashamed of her disgraceful excuse for a restaurant, maybe at one time it was good, but definitely not anymore, fast food is much better. The staff was made up of two types of people, the ones who served Dim Sum and had difficulty speaking English were very nice and friendly, however the main waiters were inattentive, rude, and full of themselves, you had to beg for their attention. The prices were outrageous, the food tasted like it was out of the Costco freezer section and we calculated it at a dollar for each small piece. My wife and I have been to hundreds of Chinese restaurants in our life, but this is by far the worst excuse for a Chinese dining experience. My bet is that Susan Lew does not eat at her restaurant, or if she does she is not served the same food that the rest of us are served.

Great Dim Sum
By pixielou76 on 08/26/2007
My family used to always drive to Kearny Mesa for Dim Sum and sometimes we would even drive as far as Montery Park, but now that Pearl is here we can get dim sum that is just as good as those other places. Very good.

So so

I'm a former worker from Pearl chinese cuisine, and although i actually enjoy their food there, i'm not quite sure if the price is worth it. The view of the park behind the restaurant is beautiful, but that hardly compensates for the lack of atmosphere in the building. The wait is horrible for Dim Sum on Saturdays and Sundays. The carpet is filthy, and the workers tend to be overstressed causing them to lose focus and their sense of tack if any. The food is pretty good...but its hardly worth the price and anything else. And honestly, i hated working there.
