Although each of the local Pizza Novas has a similar menu -- wood-fired pizzas, fresh pastas and specialty salads -- the ambience and owners differ from location to location. Owner-operated by San Diegans, the mini-chain is known around town for reasonable lunch specials, a dazzling array of pizzas and inventive pasta dishes. Whimsical decor and prompt, friendly service are a given at all the locations. Patrons can choose to go hog-wild and bulk up, or go the health-conscious route and opt for full or half-size salads while wistfully watching their companions chow down on gourmet California-style pizzas with toppings such as duck sausage, roasted garlic chicken or shrimp pesto. The Harbor Island branch has a terrific view from the upstairs patio, the Hillcrest eatery is a great place for people watching and the new Solana Beach location is a welcome respite from the sun and sand. -- Julene Snyder

upper crust!
By TREDREDWINE on 07/07/2008
I live in the Ocean Beach area so I love to go into Pizza Nova frequently. I usually crave the white pizza and the chicken tequila fettuccine but recently they have added new items on the menu that have also become my favorites. Their new house salad is delicious because it has a healthy amount of greens, dried cranberries that add a touch of sweetness and a crisp crunch of fresh apple slices. Try is with goat cheese, it's awesome! They also have a thin crust sausage and onion pizza. The thin crust is great because its less bread and still easy to eat. I prefer to substitute pepperoni for their sausage because it is spicier. This pizza also has fresh mozzarella which compliments the flavors of the pizza sauce. When I go in, I usually make a reservation ahead and request to sit on the window. The reality is, there is no bad seat. Most seats offer a view, but some in the back area offer a quieter table with more privacy. All of their staff is friendly and recognize me a regular. I guess that's the point; there are regulars that go to this restaurant, it's not just for the tourist during the summer. If you want a tourist trap go to the Seaport Village or Bali Hai, if you want delicious food at a reasonable price go to Pizza Nova. Go for the pizza, stay for the atmosphere.

This is a spot that one of my friends from 185 miles away comes to San Diego for as it is wonderful to have everything as tasty as it could be for all the customers. There is usually a group of 5 of us and we all go away swearing WE had the best selections.

Great meals at reasonable prices. The shrimp or chicken wrap are outstanding. Every meal I've eaten at any of their locations has been consistantly excellent. I haven't tried every dish on the menu (give me a few more years) but every dish I've tried has been outstanding. The food is tasty and first quality.
