Hillcrest's funky Tractor Room restaurant is a Rocky Mountain hunting lodge meets upscale cocktail lounge that seems like it came through a rip in the fabric of the space-time continuum. Yet the vibe is easily absorbed once you settle into the space, taking in all the eclectic interior elements from the gigantic antler chandelier and stuffed deer head, to the dark, heavy fabrics, rich wood details, overhead cabling and lodge-inspired art. The brainchild of Hash House A Go Go's owners, the Tractor Room serves up inventive cocktails and game meat entrees that stir just as much intrigue as the space itself. Free range buffalo stew, wild boar stew, venison meatloaf and barbeque lamb shanks team nicely with sides like bacon and maple butter acorn squash, smoked Wisconsin cheddar mac & cheese or green beans with toasted almonds. Appetizers, salads, burgers and desserts, labeled "Sugar" make the modest-sized menu seem almost surreal by Southern California standards. The restaurant's large, deck is perfect for a late-night bite or cocktail hour, choosing from their extensive library of wine and drink concoctions which features a signature Bloody Mary with a fresh stick of buffalo jerky.
