As with its North Park neighborhood, Zensei champions the style of the past while emblazoning progressive artistry upon its craft. Funky music and moody paintings bring an element of sensuality to the single dining area. The place is small, which is alright with neighborhood regulars. A cozy atmosphere much better suits this residential end of town than would some corporate monster. Most diners choose a seat at the sushi bar where they can converse with chefs and get a little light show from glinting steel as it slices into high-grade fish. If the usual miso and edamame starters don't cut it anymore, venture the oyster shooters with red and black tobiko caviar, ponzu sauce and quail egg. And since it's in North Park, the restaurant accommodates vegetarians and vegans with tofu avocado rolls and the veggie You/We roll, where you or the chef gets to pick what goes inside. Nibble nigiri or rock with the Yellow Submarine roll, filled with eel, crab cream cheese and avocado and fried tempura-golden.

Zensei's serves up style!

Any restaurant creditable of making the Zagat rating is a place worth trying. For 2008, Zensei Sushi was one of the few selected in the Zagat, listed amongst America's Top Japanese Restaurants.

I had never wanted to eat sushi but I was forced to go. I ordered a terriaki dish to avoid the sushi but ended up being forced by my party to at least try the crunchy roll. I really enjoyed the crunchy roll. I did not care for my dish and the waitress noticed she offered to change my entree. I love that! So I have to say they have great service and are eager to please.

Its no Sushi Deli II !
By mtraceface on 02/17/2006
Well, the staff is a little on the elitist North Park-type attitude. Sushi was pretty good, nothing too exciting on the menu, and if you want anything a little special, it'll cost you. Very little selection on the baked rolls. This place is packed on a fri or sat night. The atmosphere aesthetics-wise is great and they are right on the corner where something like this needed to go in, they for sure gave this area of NP a facelift!
