One of the most common questions you overhear people asking strangers around the 16th and Mission BART station is, "Do you know how to get to Liquid?" An underground hot spot with an international reputation, this small club was open for more than five years before it bought a sign. All the same, it drew wall-to-wall crowds on weekends, as it's one of the few venues in the Inner Mission to offer dancing. Resident DJs ply their wares to a young, pan-cultural audience of 20-somethings. House, techno and trance are the standard fare, though occasionally disco or salsa tunes get mixed into the pulsing beats. The bar serves tall cocktails, gallons of bottled water and plenty of beers on tap. On packed weekend nights, it can be a struggle to reach the always-busy restrooms in the back of the bar. Don't expect to chill at Liquid; nearly everybody is there to get a sweaty groove on. -- Dave Pehling
