San Francisco's juxtaposition of fantasy and hard- edged reality comes into play at The Bamboo Hut in North Beach. Located in a red-light district that, with improvement, could upgrade to a hip area soon, The Bamboo Hut manages to blend in with the hip club/strip club atmosphere along the street. It's a fun place, with kitsch-'til-you- twitch bamboo, hula, thatch and Waikiki themes abounding. The bartenders make big fat tropical drinks, including the infamous "Flaming Volcano Bowl," while guest DJs spin tunes that sound more like the street outside than the world of Aloha. If the point of your evening is to go out and go wild, the Bamboo Hut is a sensible place to do it. --Doug Konecky
