Deetjen's hasn't changed very much since it was built in the 1930's by a Norwegian with an axe and a big stack of wood. Everything here is rustic, earthy, informal and ultimately charming, and if you're into the bucolic feel, you'll probably enjoy it. But, whether or not Deetjen's is your thing depends upon how willing you are to stay in a relatively Spartan room and do things like build your own fire to prevent yourself from freezing to death. That probably won't happen, but the whole off-beat experience still might be too bohemian for some tastes.If you can't part with your cell phone, need picture-in-picture TV and only stay in places that provide cushy robes and impeccable room service, you won't be happy here. But for back-to-basics types, this collection of buildings -- set back clandestinely in a blissful nestle of redwoods -- is the place to commune with nature while avoiding the nastier parts of camping.No two rooms are alike, and, since the walls are notoriously thin, children can only stay in the two-room cottages. The onsite restaurant, set appropriately in a farmhouse, is a favorite with the locals. --Brendon Hanley
