The name Big Sur is derived from the Spanish "El Sur Grande," literally Big South. The region consists of a 90-mile stretch of spectacular coastline, majestic redwoods and confiers, pristine beaches at the foot of daunting cliffs, and wildflife. It runs along Highway 1 beginning at Carmel (130 miles south of SF) and ending at San Simeon (240 miles north of LA). Visitors are flanked on one side by the Santa Lucia Mountains and on the other by the Pacific Ocean. The attractions and variety of activities available here are perhaps the most abundant in California. Several state parks are in the region (Andrew Molera,Julia Pfeiffer Burns and Pfeiffer Big Sur among them) as are numerous beaches and inns. Many visitors come to see Hearst Castle at San Simeon, which is a State Historical Monument and a National Historic Landmark. The best weather for touring is in the spring and fall.
