The secret is out about Golden Gate Bakery. Even though it's but a small storefront in the middle of Chinatown, many people believe Golden Gate produces delicacies unlike any other Chinese bakery in San Francisco. The lines out the door at Lunar New Year attest to the famous Moon Cakes, but the real prizes are the Melon Cakes, not too sweet but very plump and flaky, and easily shared by two people. On the counter are curried meat pies (try the beef and potato). In the back of the shop, you'll likely find a bevy of older men reading newspapers and playing cards -- some of them look like they haven't gotten out of their chairs since the Sung dynasty. The ladies at the counter speak English when spoken to, but expect to point a lot when ordering. Golden Gate Bakery is a true San Francisco prize.

Long lines but..

This is one of the best bakeries in Chinatown. Big selection. Long lines at times but worth it. Prices a little higher than others but still a bargain.

Egg tart

The egg tart is the BEST. It's not cheap but whenever we go to Chinatown, we'll stand in line to get this Chinese pastry by the dozens.

coffee crunch cake
By britelgts on 07/14/2006
I don't know if this is the same one or not, but we used to go to a Chinese restaurant/bakery on Grant & I'd always get their "coffee crunch cake". I never ate there, but this cake was delicious. As I recall, there was booths & it was next to an alley.
