A San Francisco institution since 1861, Gumps is the city's finest emporium of Asian, American and European objects d'art and home accessories. A giant 18th century Ch'ing Dynasty Buddha presides at the store's center. The main floor houses fabulous lacquered-wood furniture, Japanese tea service and blown glass art. The fine jewelry selection contains jade, coral and pearls with a Pacific Rim design influence. Gump's has the hush of a museum, and indeed, the staff seems more curatorial than helpful. The second floor is bridal registry heaven, dedicated to an impressive selection of china and crystal with a bit of bed and bath mixed in. Each display is impeccable. Delicate rice bowls are paired with chopsticks and arranged on a gold tray. Even the simplest place setting of white dinnerware is studded with magenta and amber linens.
