The Scoop: If carnations, roses and irises bore you, then youll want to drop by Ixia. This place puts together the most original bouquets and arrangements in all of San Francisco. Here you can purchase a bouquet of moonstar seed pods accented with bamboo, or a perfectly ribbon-wrapped bunch of orange pincushion proteas. Choose from a healthy selection of rare orchids or walk away with an armful of willow branches. Expect to pay quite a bit more at Ixia than you would at your corner flower shop. The Scene: A virtual forest, meadow and desert under one small roof, Ixia looks like a plant laboratory, only prettier. Giant apothecary jars filled with stones, dried flowers, twigs and moss line the walls. Aside from a small refrigerator stocked with regular flowers like hydrangeas, sunflowers and dahlias, its hard to tell that this place actually sells bouquets, arrangements and floral art. The window displays are worth the visit alone. Every week or so, there are two new, utterly creative life-size arrangements in the windows. According to a staff member, each arrangement takes an amazing 3-6 hours to put together. Insider Tips: For a great botany lesson, just ask any of the friendly guys behind the counter where one of the plants in the shop is grown or what species it belongs to.
