Good enough for me.
By Slonobono on 06/24/2009
I have been to John's Grill a several times, but not in the last few years. The atmosphere was great. I am a Dashielle Hammet Fan and totally dug being on the movie set of The Maltese Falcon. I heard some great jazz there too. Food was fine. We had a nice party with Venezuelan clients. Our party of six had a great time. I am a careful eater and enjoyed everything they served me, particularly the sea-food. Not the best food in San Francisco, but good enough and one of my favorite restaurants, anywhere.

An enormous disappointment

Worst meal by far I had on a recent SF trip. I had an overcooked flavorless steak and my wife had one of their signature dishes -- a variation on oysters Rockefeller -- that had a horrible off-flavor (and the oysters were tiny). Our waiter left in the middle of our dinner and was replaced by another with no explanation. They get one star for pouring a nice stiff drink at the bar. This is a tourist trap living off its history; avoid it.

We had early dinner before a show. Oyster Wellington, spinich salad, and es'cargot. Food was good, although overpriced for size of servings. Service was good. Very entertaining watching employees constantly opening the utility room closet to check the schedule over and over again to see who was working.Interesting seeing "Safeway" bread as brand being served.
