This five-story Edwardian hotel is as old-school and wonderful as any you'll find in the city. From the lobby full of tapestries and plush couches to the well-apportioned rooms with four- poster beds, down pillows and fine antiques, the hotel throws a canopy over life and protects you from the cares and worries of quotidian existence. This is the San Francisco that not even the old-timers remember; no wonder many consider the Majestic one of the most romantic hotels in the city. Most of the rooms have great views from the hotel's signature bay windows. Whether you're visiting in the notoriously chilly summer or winter, ask for a room with a fireplace. The hotel is situated away from the bustle of downtown, but you can always take its private limo to Union Square or Yerba Buena Center, or walk a couple blocks and catch the cable car.

Old world charm is the best words I can use to describe this local landmark. The decor is/was awesome, the butterfly collection in the bar was unique, the elevator was slower than my ole grandmas' mollasses, and the room was a great change of pace from the modernistic hotels of today. Service is friendly...and the only reason I couldn't bring myself to the final star in the rating...was because...I sensed a need for some renovation. BUT!!!...do not pass up a night here. It's one you won't soon forget. Don't tell anyone...but we took a bottle of port to the roof..and enjoyed the salt air, cool breeze, and the solitude. Many buildings in the area are taller..but it was still a nice break from a typical bar or terrace setting. I was surprised to find that the locals I talked with..were not aware of this hotel. They are missing the boat here. Enoy~
