A diner, in the classic sense, is more than just a joint that serves burgers, shakes and fries. If that weren't true, every Burger King and Carl's Jr. would be considered a diner. A diner requires a certain retro look and feel, preferably from the '50s or '60s, and the dining room should gleam with lots of chrome or stainless steel. Sparky's meets all the requirements. A quarter-century old, Sparky's evokes 'Happy Days,' 'Rebel Without a Cause' and poodle skirts. It features a large variety of burgers, breakfast 24 hours each day and nightly dinner specials, such as meatloaf with green beans and mashed potatoes. But this is a new century, so in addition to traditional root beer floats, cheese fries, tuna melts and vanilla Cokes, there is an espresso bar as well. For nighthawks, Sparky's delivers until 4AM. -- Scott Sax

Last of the oldies but goodies!
By Linamarta on 06/11/2008
Not very many places are still around that were choice spots when the city was jumping around the clock. Sparky's was always noted for their burgers. They cn be ordered rare and arrive juicy as ordered. They use real cheese for their burgers and their fries are quite good, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I miss the pizza that they used to have here--they had the best shrimp pizza in the city and beyond because they did not use canned shrimp like most places do. The shrimp were bite sized not the ity bity size. I do wish they would bring this back. The sauce was good, and the crusts were eatible down to the last bite!

Decent Food
By Theselwyn on 05/30/2008
Well the food is always decent and 24 hour restaurants ain't too plentiful, but the service rates from marginal to insulting. I do totally get that waiting tables is beneath the dignity of our 20somethings arty-types and they'd rather be doing something else, but why must I be punished for asking for my check or my partner asking them to turn down their blaring music so we can discuss the menu? After eating at Sparky's several times over the last few years, we decided never to go back.

A Cool SPARK in San Francisco....
By tiahollingsworth on 03/21/2002
I recently relocated from Miami South Beach Florida. Finding Sparky's was a spark that I constantly light, it is great to go to a place where the food is good and the waiters and waitress are visually unique and hip. The customers that dine at the dinner are a wide spectrum.. The music is upbeat and a great place to go after a night out or to be with friends in a hip ubeat enviroment.
