The Sweetwater Saloon has been the place to go for seeing "first performances" of local talent on the way to fame and fortune, including Noelle Hampton, Vinyl, Train, Big Blue Hearts and more. It has featured stars like John Lee Hooker, Bonnie Raitt, Woody Harrelson, Craig Chaquico, Robert Cray, Etta James, Taj Mahal, Elvis Costello and Harry Connick Jr. The Sweetwater was voted "Best Live Music Venue" for 1998 in a reader's poll by the Pacific Sun. It ranked No. 1 in the Chronicle's 1988 Readers' Choice Award, too. Plus, it's only 13 miles from San Francisco. -- Wally Aron

I just saw John Sebastion there, he was great. Awhile back I saw Billy Preston, with Clarence Clemons sitting in. Anytime the Edge are playing, go see them. No more whining about the old owner, the Sweetwater lives on.
